Opera Garnier, Paris, sparked the idea for a novel by Gaston Laroux called "The Phantom of the Opera". The opera house was beset with various problems during its construction, including being built on an underground lake. Later on, the main chandelier fell from the ceiling. It is out of these beginnings that the story of the phantom was formed.
